This guitar was built in 1989 for the 'Headless Children' tour when Blackie also got three Jacksons. To this day I haven't found a picture of it from that era, thought the graphic is obviously from the Headless Children album artwork. The neck reads "Touch me and die". Some of the specs are unusual for Chris - it's the only Jackson he had with regular sharkfin inlays and 24 frets.
There is a rare bootleg video from Philadelphia 1989 where Chris starts the gig with this guitar. I tried my best to create decent screenshots from it. Below are two of them but sadly the quality of the source is so bad that we can't identify things like original bridge or pickup. If someone finds a pic of the guitar from 89-90 please let me know!
Chris used the explorer on the K.F.D. tour and it was then pictured in a Japanese Young Guitar magazine tour report. As you can see, the graphic was almost completely covered with tape that was later removed as seen on the other pic. The guitar appeared on the live DVD "The Sting" in 2000.
Moby met Chris in LA, 2003. They tested some guitars and Moby got to play the Headless Explorer! Chris told him that the body shape came from Wayne Guitars. Oz Fox of Stryper used to have a similar one and Wayne is still making those, though Oz is now an endorsee of GMW guitars. The guitar also has a cavity for the wireless system, and the current pickup is a Tony Iommi signature model. Below are two pics from the meeting. Thanks Moby!!! ![]() Dave Kelly took some photos of the guitar in 2007 at Chris' place. Thanks!
The Headless Explorer is still getting a lot of action. Recently Chris put a California Highway Patrol sticker on it that according to a 2010 W.A.S. interview came from the door of a cop car!
And we'll wrap things up with a special greeting...
